ILKAY ALA

Graduated from Dokuz Eylül University, Faculty of Architecture in 2002, Ilkay Ala completed the Design Culture Management Program at Bilgi University in 2008. Since 2002, she has been working on architectural and interior design projects. The architect, who stands out with her housing and textile showroom projects, also designs and practices in projects such as stores, offices and cafes. She continues to work professionally with her team at Ilkay Ala Architecture Office, which she founded in 2016, and also designs for Studio Fav brand she founded with Duygu Karakas.




DUYGU KARAKAS

After graduating from Üsküdar American High School, she graduated from Boğaziçi University, Department of International Trade; and held sales and brand communication positions in international companies for six years. After studying Visual Communication Design at European School of Design in Germany between 2012-2014; and with the dream of creating innovative designs she founded Studio Fav brand in 2015 with İlkay Ala.

Duygu Karakas focuses on producing simple and original designs that can connect with users for Studio Fav brand.

‘’When designing the Piedra Bedroom, we wanted to create a space which was warm, peaceful and which at the same time has a refined elegance. In doing so, we tried to stay in touch with nature. Although the comfort in the bedroom has always been at the forefront, we thought that a striking visuality would also make the user happy. When designing the room, we tried to combine comfort, luxury and nature in a good balance. While inviting nature from the large windows in the space, we wanted to make a strong green impact with the wall image and plants we used inside the room.’’

What does it mean to design for you?

Design means innovation and originality for us. We believe that design should have an idea behind it and give the user a new perspective and a new experience. In this way, we think that a good design can connect with the user and that the timelessness that every designer wants to achieve can only occur as a result of this connection. It is important for us to interact with different visual art disciplines when designing products. Painting, cinema and graphic design are all an inspiration for us. We like to be lean in product design, and to achieve a striking visuality in simplicity is at the center of our design language.

When you were designing this place, what inspired you?

As part of the Enza Home Book project, we wanted to create a space that was warm, peaceful and at the same time refined. In doing so, we tried to stay in touch with nature. When designing the room, we tried to combine comfort, luxury and nature in a good balance. While inviting nature from the large windows in the space, we wanted to make a strong green impact with the wall image and plants we used inside the room.

How we should use Piedra Bedroom within decoration? And what are the essential components of it?

Piedra Bedroom offers a convenient opportunity to use accessories such as copper and brass. Warmer and more energetic atmosphere can be achieved by balancing the dominant green tones in the furniture with feminine tones such as light bronze, pink and powder. In the bedroom we preferred lighting and pots with sculptural forms, thus we achieved a simple but striking visuals.

What are the outstanding trends of 2019?

We think that vintage-oriented artisan designs will come to the fore in lighting and this will add originality and aesthetic value to the spaces. Velvet fabrics, floral patterns, brass items will continue to be effective this year just like last year. We will begin to feel the warm tones of brass more intensely in every corner of the house, including accessories, bathroom and kitchen. We will feel the impact of sustainability in the new season decoration trends just like in recent years. The tendency of the users to choose the products that they will use in decoration for a longer period and which they can connect personally will increase.
